Now is the time! Challenge yourself to quantum leap your practice and your heart.

Daily practice is something special. When we reorganize our day to prioritize practice, to carve out the time and space for the ritual of personal sadhana, we start to see and feel ourselves and the world around us more and more clearly. The incessant story-telling we are habituated to, which narrates our days and dictates how we feel, begins to release its grip, giving way to a more essential story, an unadulterated experience of this life.

But we know it’s not necessarily easy to find the time. Work, family, all the rest of it. This is why I started offering the biannual Maha Yoga Challenge. Let’s challenge ourselves to practice every day for a month and watch our practice and our hearts quantum leap to a new level! Both as individuals and as a community.

To accommodate myriad schedules, I’ll be adding 6:30-7:35am classes every Monday through Friday during the challenge. And if our numbers require it, I’ll add an earlier Saturday morning practice as well. You’ll have the choice between that class and the other class I teach that day. Note that on Monday, the only class offered is the early morning class and on Sunday, only the 5:30pm will be offered. You can also take multiple classes per day if that’s the rhythm you’re in!

Every early morning class will be followed by an optional 15-minute guided meditation and chat. Double challenge yourself with daily asana practice and a daily sit. A short and relaxation-based meditation every day will impact every aspect of life and offer you more heart space to navigate your days with grace.

On occasional evenings, you’ll receive an inspirational email, reminding you to get a good night’s sleep and prepare for your practice the next day.

To complete the challenge, practice six days a week with me at Shala. That is, you can take one day off per week of your choosing. Have a look at the schedule to the right; you might want to map out your month in advance. Out of town or home practice will not count towards the end-of-challenge T-shirt. But! You will also have access to the On-Demand video library for days you can’t make it to class but you want to keep the momentum strong.

Your price includes the Maha Yoga T-shirt for those who complete the challenge. The challenge begins with the Monday 6:30am class on April 7th and ends with the Sunday 5:30 class on May 4th. Open to all levels!

IMPORTANT NOTES

* Monthly class packs will be automatically paused for the duration of the Maha.

* $20 discount for Shala Members.

* Cancellation policy will apply during the Maha. No-shows and late cancellations will incur a $3 fee per class.

The next Maha Yoga Challenge will be in the fall!

Don’t take my word for it.

  • My yoga practice is wildly inconsistent, but I consistently show up for maha month. And I consistently complete the challenge. There’s something about the structure and intention that carries me. Each time, my motivation is to build strength and flexibility, but I am awed by the sense of calm and slowness that the practice brings me.

  • My only complaint about Maha would be that it only happens twice a year. I have always loved practice in the wee hours of the morning and am one of those annoying people who pops out of bed at 5:30am and wants to chat. Each morning, the room is intentionally quiet until Mira begins class with a sweet poignant Dharma talk. Each day I grow stronger, mentally and physically. I eat better that month and make new friends. I’m nicer. And taller…okay, maybe not taller, I just feel taller. I’ve had the great fortune to practice with many wonderful teachers over the past 20 years, Mira is one my favorites. She’s a gifted asana ‘weaver’ and a delightful story teller. She holds space in a room that feels safe, open, challenging, fun and nurturing, all at the same time. Usually, when I suggest someone new join me for Mira’s class, I just say, “trust me, you’ll love her”. They always do. Maha is a safe place to chill in savasana should you not feel up to the challenge Mira will surely offer up each morning. If you’re on the fence about it, try it! Trust me, you’ll love it.

  • I have attended all but the very first Maha, which I didn't attend because I didn't think I had the time. What a mistake! Attending the Maha is the single most important thing I do for myself every six months. It's an amazing time for contemplation, community, health, and self-respect. I recommend the Maha for yogis of all levels. Make the time!

  • "For me, the beauty of the Maha Yoga Challenge is working with the same yogis, Mira, and a building asana sequence each day. I sense that everyone that completes a Maha is unlikely to forget some of the people they practiced with on some of these cool, quiet mornings. There is something about working in such a unique way for an extended period of time that bonds you with the community, the practice, and the teacher. For Mira's part, she spends time crafting both thoughtful, philosophically relevant themes and challenging asana sequences. They are sprinkled of course with the frequent, detailed refinement cues and the occasionally clever jokes she is known for. It all blends together to make Shala feel alive with music, sweat, determination, and love. I finished with a stronger practice, friends, memories, .... and a t-shirt."

  • The Maha has been such a powerful way for me to get back into relationship with Yoga, my body, and my inner resourcefulness after an extended hiatus. By committing to a structure that invites peace and movement into my life each day, I notice improvements in my mental health, physical strength, and my ability to move through my chaotic day with greater ease and openness. Mira does an amazing job creating the space for the Maha crew- one of deep acceptance, light heartedness (morning laughter is the best), and the belief that this practice supports our personal and collective journeys. I’m already looking forward to the next one!
